Basketball season. Football season. Golf season. Back to school season.

As hundreds of thousands of student-athletes are due back in school over the coming weeks, this is an optimal time for them to build (and improve) their brand.

If student-athletes created content consistently this summer, good for them! It puts them ahead of other athletes who took it easy on posting while they were out of school.

If a student-athlete did not spend their summer building their brand and creating content, they can read these tips here.

A student-athlete might be asking: What should I post for the new school year? And how can I keep the momentum going?

New (school) year’s resolutions

  • Commit to consistency

    • Creating a content calendar is a handy tool for knowing what and when to post. It doesn’t need to be robust; rather, it should be consistent. (ie., every week, every Tuesday and Thursday at 3p, etc.)

    • Similar to practicing for your sport; the more an athlete practices, the better they get. The same applies to content; the more you post (and hold yourself accountable to your content calendar), the better.

  • Share your goals

    • Creating and sharing new year’s resolutions is something people do. Why not do the same for the new academic (and athletic year) as well?

      • A video containing your academic goals, athletic goals, and personal goals for the upcoming school year helps tell your story in a relatable way. You can also hold yourself accountable to these goals, and create another video at the end of the school year to see how well you stuck to your plan

  • Content ideas

    • Day in the Life: Show your audience a common day of a student-athlete. Practice, class, grocery shopping, eating dinner with teammates, etc. The more relatable you are in your content, the better.

    • Interview your teammates: While you know your teammates well, your audience doesn’t. Therefore, collaborating on content with them and introducing them to your audience helps them build their brand - and can help build your audience with their followers as well.

    • Hobbies: Create content on what you’re interested in away from your sport. It can be sewing, collecting stamps, traveling, anything. Highlight yourself more outside of your sport.
