Today’s Case

Loyola Marymount's Dominick Harris wants to help teammates with NIL

After spending the past three seasons at Gonzaga, junior guard Dominick Harris, now at Loyola Marymount, hopes to bring his basketball, business and branding experience to the Lions program.

Harris has NIL partnerships with Brady Brand and Suja Organic (received products in exchange for social media posts). He recently agreed to a deal with professional tennis player Naomi Osaka‘s skincare brand KINLÒ. Harris has also received compensation via NIL deals with Cuts Clothing and the health company Force Factor. Additionally, he opted into the “Peacock Classic” NIL opportunities through NBC Sports Athlete Direct, which also provided the opportunity for Harris to promote the film “Shooting Stars,” which is about LeBron James‘s childhood.

Harris: “As far as the NIL aspect, I’m just telling them [teammates] like, ‘Create more pathways as far as basketball. ‘Open yourself up. Create as many pathways as you can and leave as many marks and impacts as you can since this is a big opportunity for us athletes. We can take control of our own image.’ So as far as NIL, I’m trying to just give them little comments here and there and advice.”

The Verdict:

  • Good for Harris to set an example for his new teammates on how to maximize their NIL at a smaller school

    • This not shows his maturity as a person and athlete, but his willingness to share knowledge with his teammates on the NIL process is outstanding

  • This is essentially NIL 1.0 (Harris) teaching the new cohort about NIL 2.0

    • With NIL entering its third year, current college athletes have had to figure this out from scratch (and with the help of agents, schools, etc.)

      • By setting up his teammates for NIL success, Harris is ensuring they can hit the ground running vs. learning as they go and making mistakes.

  • More athletes should be doing this for their teammates

    • Athletes who conduct regular NIL deals should absolutely share their knowledge (and contacts, if they are comfortable) with teammates and other athletes at their school.

      • This can lead to team-wide and/or school-wide deals, more individual athletes earning NIL deals, and more education around the NIL process, to name a few.
