Today’s Case

The Cavinder twins will be leaving Miami basketball after one season

Hanna and Haley Cavinder, aka the Cavinder twins

Hanna and Haley Cavinder will not use their final season of basketball eligibility, opting instead to pursue career opportunities away from the sport.

Haley Cavinder on NBC’s The Today Show last Thursday stated, “Obviously it’s such a difficult position to be in, because we wanted to take our fifth year and continue to play, but I think it came down to just optimizing all the opportunities that we have ahead of us.”

The Cavinder twins transferred from Fresno State to Miami last year, which helped elevate their national profile on and off the court, including their NIL portfolios. According to On3 NIL Valuations, Haley’s $930,000 valuation and Hanna’s $924,000 valuation are good for the second and third spots in the women’s college basketball rankings.

The Verdict:

  • They are a prime example of the success that student-athletes can have in the NIL era.

  • This is a smart move for them to use their on-court presence to build their off-court brand.

    • As they’ve gained popularity over the past year, now is a prime opportunity for them to capitalize on deals that will help their brand going forward - lessons they learned from their NIL dealings.

  • They also signed with the WWE for their NIL (Next In Line) program in 2021 while still at Fresno State to potentially become wrestlers in the future. Some thoughts:

    • It will probably take several years for them to make their debut on WWE TV. They would need to first work on NXT - the developmental territory for WWE (think G-League or Triple A baseball) before making the main roster.

      • This may work against them as they probably want to capitalize on their notoriety immediately.

    • Of the few dozen athletes signed to the WWE NIL program, only one has become a professional wrestler; therefore, again, it might not be an immediate solution for them.
