Sports Court: NIL Newsletter #4

The fastest three minutes in name, image, and likeness

Hello friends! Welcome to the Sports Court NIL Newsletter where three times per week, I will discuss insights and news related to name, image, and likeness in three minutes or less.

Today’s Case

Bronny James, DJ Wagner showcasing their NIL impact at McDonald’s All-American Game practices

LeBron James, Jr. (aka Bronny) and DJ Wagner wearing Nike’s.

Yesterday, Bronny James and DJ Wagner were seen sporting Nike’s at the McDonald’s All-American Game practices. Seemingly harmless, right?

Not so much.

The McDonald’s All-American Game is sponsored by adidas, which requires the uniforms, gear, and shoes provided for the game to be adidas brand. However, James and Wagner are signed to Nike via NIL deals.

The Verdict:

  • Times have changed: This shifts the narrative for these types of games and having to strictly adhere to the brand that sponsors said games/events.

  • Curious if the adidas sponsorship deal requires that all participants wear adidas shoes during practices, or just during the game? Or not even during the game at all?

    • Given the above, I’m guessing James and Wagner will be wearing Nike’s during the game.

  • This reminds me of Michael Jordan’s youngest son Marcus playing basketball for UCF (an adidas school at the time) and wearing a pair of Air Jordan’s during a game, in which adidas quickly dropped UCF Athletics as a whole, costing the school $3M. Nike soon came in and decided to sponsor UCF.

    • Not sure if adidas will be going to this extreme to disassociate themselves with the McDonald’s All-American Game, but interesting nonetheless.
