Sports Court: NIL Newsletter #1

News and trends on name, image, and likeness

Hello friends! Welcome to the Sports Court NIL Newsletter where three times per week, I will discuss insights and news related to name, image, and likeness.

Today’s Case

FanWord creates a directory that makes it easy for brands to connect with athletes

FanWord March Madness athlete directory

FanWord, an athlete storytelling and branding company, launched its men’s and women’s NCAA tournament athlete directories, which features over 1,000 players. The goal is to simplify how businesses and fans can find athletes and help connect and collaborate with athletes on NIL deals.

Each athlete profile includes 2-4 links, which could include Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Opendorse, INFLCR Exchange and NIL Store. The profiles also include follower counts for social media channels.

The Court’s decision:

  • Phenomenal initiative by FanWord, as this allows a one-stop shop to connect athletes and brands

  • Instead of searching for athletes’ social media channels (and potentially messaging someone with a similar name that is not the athlete), this removes the guesswork of finding the right profiles.

  • This essentially creates a website for athletes, as every athlete can claim their profile to further customize it and include additional data, such as NIL deals, interests, personalized content and more.
