Is It In You?

And no, this is not about Gatorade

We see plenty of college athletes taking advantage of NIL in various ways.

Brand partnerships

Collabs

Networking

Brand Building

etc.

However, is leveraging your NIL absolutely mandatory as a college athlete? And should you be putting in significant effort in doing so?

Yes and No

  • Reasons for Yes

    • Leverage this era

      • As a college student, you are literally living in the greatest era of college athletics. Therefore, it would be amiss for you not to take advantage of the numerous opportunities in front of you.

    • 40 years, not 4 years

      • Think long-term; after your college athletic playing days are done, you will need to leverage your personal brand for networking and career opportunities. Therefore, working on your brand during college will give you a leg up on others who have not invested time into themselves.

    • Why not?

      • As in, what do you have to lose? Investing in yourself, your personal brand, and your NIL is a win-win for you now and in the future.

  • Reasons for No

    • Additional task

      • I get it; student-athletes are very busy. Putting time into yet another initiative might not be appealing or interesting.

    • Don’t know where to start

      • This is common among student-athletes; They don’t know the first step. (And that’s ok.) This is especially common among college athletes at smaller colleges that don’t have NIL resources like Power Four schools.

In conclusion

Athletes are not mandated to leverage NIL. However; the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, both now and in the future.
