Today’s Case

Georgia football’s Javon Bullard signs 'Buckeye Crunch' NIL deal stemming from Marvin Harrison Jr. hit

Javon Bullard’s hit on Marvin Harrison Jr. - College Football Playoff Semifinal

Georgia defensive back Javon Bullard continues to profit off his hit on Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr. in the College Football Playoff - this time in the form of a "Bullard’s Buckeye Crunch,” a new flavor sold by Alumni Cookie Dough in Athens.

Bullard's hit on Harrison was infamously printed as a signed photo by a memorabilia company representing the Bulldogs earlier this year. Copies of the hit, signed by Bullard with a "night night" inscription, were being sold by More Than Sports before the company apologized and took down the option to buy.

The Buckeyes were bothered by the targeting reversal following the hit on Harrison, and head coach Ryan Day had numerous conversations with Big Ten officials regarding the hit. Harrison Jr. also chimed in.

The Verdict:

  • This is done in very poor taste (no pun intended)

    • Profiting from a big play is one thing; profiting from a big play in which a player enters concussion protocol and has to miss the rest of the game is poor sportsmanship.

      • Also, something about monetizing a player getting hurt is strange.

    • Curious if there were any checks and balances done here.

      • Was this deal disclosed to the school?

      • Did anyone in his inner circle advise against this?

      • Did Bullard’s NIL agent (if he has one) agree to this?

    • As ruled on the field as a targeting reversal, technically the hit was legal; however, this is just a bad look all around, and Bullard continues to use this one play to build his brand, whereas he should broaden his strategy for better NIL deals.
