Today’s Case

Dexcom, the global leader in real-time continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes, announced the launch of the second season of Dexcom U, the first-ever NIL program exclusively for college athletes with diabetes. The program was created in response to a 2022 survey which found that improving representation for people with diabetes can inspire future generations of athletes living with the condition.
The 2023 Dexcom U roster consists of 20 athletes with diabetes across 10 sports, 20 colleges and includes 11 new team members. As part of the program, Dexcom has created educational resources for athletes with diabetes as well as for parents, coaches and teammates so they can better understand the disease and how to support the people with diabetes in their lives. Resources include first-hand advice from Dexcom U athletes as well as tips for managing diabetes, exercise and mental wellbeing – on and off the field.
Over the last year, athletes on the Dexcom U inaugural roster participated in 381 collegiate competitions with the help of Dexcom continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology.
The Verdict
Amazing way for Dexcom to partner with college athletes
Healthcare is not the first field that comes to mind when speaking about NIL (not to me, at least), but the fact Dexcom A) saw a need to service college athletes and B) simultaneously create an NIL opportunity for them, is outstanding.
Additionally, the athletes in the program can view this as a mentorship opportunity to guide and inspire the next generation of athletes with diabetes.
Healthcare NIL deals are growing, but few and far between for now
Last month, the Department of Justice partnered with San Diego State University men’s basketball team in an NIL deal to combat illicit fentanyl use - which is believed to be the first NIL deal for the federal agency.
There are plenty of opportunities to tie-in NIL with healthcare, such as cancer awareness, promoting meet and greets with patients at local hospitals, etc.
Potential career opportunities who pursue healthcare post-graduation
In addition to NIL deals, these companies can also provide internships, chances to shadow employees, etc. to learn more about the day-to-day of working in a healthcare organization, should athletes choose to pursue this line of work upon graduation.
