Today’s Case

HBCU student-athletes promote the MyMcDonald's rewards program

McDonald's is partnering with over 40 HBCU student-athletes from four colleges in the atlantic coast region to promote their new MyMcDonald's rewards program. These athletes will be featuring a new, limited time frozen slushy, as well as the mobile order pay feature offered by the fast food chain on their social media channels.

Sports marketing agency Postgame facilitated the agreements between the McDonald’s franchise owners and the participating athletes.

Postgame CEO Danny Morrissey: "We help brands leverage partnerships with these college athletes to drive a marketing activation with a measurable reason… It's intentional, brands want to be more inclusive, and they're partnering with athletes from Grambling and other HBCUs."

The Verdict:

  • Love the HBCU focus

    • Not only does this showcase these athletes and schools for NIL deals, but also does so in a big way with 40 athletes from these institutions - many of which have a McDonald’s near campus.

  • Regional campaign has value

    • With the partnership focusing on southeast United States schools, this proves that a national/global brand can still activate a deal for a specific area.

      • Additionally, working with athletes who are somewhere between the hometown hero and the nationwide star shows that every athlete can take advantage of NIL.

  • Contrary to belief, this is a pretty organic fit

    • While McDonald’s might not be deemed the best restaurant for nutritious choices, plenty of athletes consume Big Macs and fries regularly, so a partnership between the two sides is optimal.

  • Perfect timing for frozen drinks

    • With the arrival of summer, this was a perfect time to announce the agreement for the beverages - while the mobile pay order feature will continue long-term.
