Sports Court #18 | No Manning NIL money
The fastest three minutes in name, image and likeness
Today’s Case
Texas quarterback Arch Manning has taken no NIL money to date; won’t do so until he’s a starter
Texas quarterback Arch Manning
Arch Manning has a recognizable name (nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, and grandson of Archie Manning) and superstar potential. However, according to Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian, Manning hasn’t take a single dollar for his name, image and likeness to date.
Speaking to the Touchdown Club of Houston, Sarkisian stated, "He's taken zero money from NIL," recounting a text message he received from Arch's father, Cooper Manning. "In the end, his dad texted me and said, 'If there's a message to tell any of the other recruits you're recruiting, it's that Arch Manning is coming to Texas because he loves the University of Texas. He loves the coaches, and he loves the program. This is not about NIL.'"
Sarkisian also spoke about Archie Manning, noting, "The beauty of it for us, here's the guy that has an NIL value of whatever it is, and this guy's grandpa won't let him take NIL money. He [Archie] said, 'You can take NIL money when you become a player, when you start.' So, that's an interesting perspective from Archie."
The Verdict:
This is not as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be
Arch probably just wants to focus on football and school in his first semester.
I also appreciate the fact he’s not trying to get NIL deals immediately, as he knows they will come at virtually any point in his college career.
Arch can still take advantage of non-money NIL benefits
Personal branding, career development, social media presence, etc. are many benefits of NIL that are not tied to money.
However, he may have family connections, along with UT athletic department resources, that can help him with all these facets
Despite all this, Arch’s NIL valuation according to On3 is $3.2M, the third highest in college sports.
Whether he earns that much in NIL deals is yet to be determined, his name carries significant value for brands.
