NIL is one piece of the pie
And why it should be viewed as such

NIL has been a gamechanger for college athletics.
From students earning partnerships and money, to post-playing days opportunities, to education related to legal, financial, and personal branding, the positives outweigh the negatives.
However, NIL should be viewed as one piece of a larger college athletic ecosystem, both for the student-athletes and the schools.
What does this mean for athletes?
Don’t put all your eggs in the NIL basket
As mentioned above, NIL is one factor that student-athletes should leverage. While most athletes realize this, some feel that NIL will make them rich and financially independent (it most likely will not).
If NIL is viewed as one tool in your toolbox instead of the entire hardware store, student-athletes will approach this differently.
Leverage NIL for other opportunities
What can student-athletes use NIL for other than brand deals?
Networking and connections to people in your industry/major, internship and career opportunities, coaching within your sport, etc. are just a few ways NIL can be leveraged for more than making money and securing deals.
Ask yourself “What Can I Do?”
Some student-athletes (not all) expect NIL deals to come their way because they are an elite athlete or “because they deserve it”.
Instead of taking this approach, ask yourself what you can do to improve your NIL presence and leverage it to your advantage as part of your student-athlete journey.
Some ideas: Defining your personal brand, posting on social media more frequently, learning new skills, etc.
